A note from the designer: The phrase, “All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well” is a phrase written by Julian of Norwich during the Middle Ages. Her book, Revelations of Divine Love, is thought to be the first written in English by a woman. She wrote it during a period of great suffering. The 100 Years War between England and France was in full swing, with the side effect of famine. It was also a time of pandemic, as the bubonic plague swept through Europe in waves, decimating the population of that continent. Three outbreaks occurred in her city during her lifetime, and she herself nearly died from an unknown disease. Pain, starvation, and sickness were all around her for her entire life, many in her day attributing it to the wrath of God. It is a wonder then, that her response is not one of despair or judgement, but of love and hope.

Our days are not nearly as horrific as hers were, yet they are not free of calamity. I hope that as you stitch this simple design, you find peace and hope and are reminded that indeed, though at times it may not seem like it, “All will be well.”
